Whole Foods Market Opens as Anchor Retail at The Parks at Walter Reed

More Retail, Housing Under Construction in Historic Upper Northwest Neighborhood

(Washington, DC - June 28, 2023) – The Parks at Walter Reed achieves a significant project milestone today with the opening of anchor retailer Whole Foods Market.  Located on the ground floor of The Hartley, a 323-unit luxury apartment building, the long-awaited 47,000-square-foot store brings a grocery store to this upper Northwest DC community and leads a list of new dining and neighborhood-serving retailers coming to this historic 66-acre campus. These retailers include Chase Bank, Jinya Ramen Bar, Mezeh Mediterranean Grill, The Charmery, and Nailsaloon, as well as an array of cultural and arts programming drawing people from around the region. A grand opening event with Mayor Muriel Bowser, Councilmember Janeese Lewis George and Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton  is scheduled for July 20, 2023.

“Whole Foods Market offers The Parks’ residents and surrounding neighbors an array of groceries and food options that this neighborhood has been craving. Located at The Parks Marketplace, the commercial center of the development, Whole Foods is the latest in a series of major milestones and represents a significant moment for this project. Leasing momentum is strong and more food and beverage and retail announcements are coming,” said Katie Wiacek, Managing Director at Hines.

Connected by 16 acres of green and open space, The Parks will ultimately feature 130,000 square feet of retail including the Whole Foods, over 2,200 units of townhomes, condos, and apartments (including 20% affordable units), as well as office, ambulatory care by Howard University, the foreign language immersion charter school DC International, a dog park, a playground, a DPR swimming pool, and a broad mix of recreation and arts uses. Currently 1,670 residential units are complete or under construction.

“The Parks at Walter Reed offers exciting options for people to live, no matter what stage of life they’re in,  from for-sale townhomes, to luxury apartments and condominiums, to co-living and senior housing.  This neighborhood is like no other place in the city, where everything you need is at your fingertips in the midst of a green oasis, with robust cultural activities and easy access to the rest of the city,” said Caroline Kenney, Managing Director, Private Public Ventures at Urban Atlantic..
